Isner tops Tomic in 56 mins to reach Delray semis
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP)â"John Isner reached his first semifinal of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bernard Tomic of Australia at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Friday.
In a swirling wind that annoyed players, Isner put up nine aces and won four of his nine service games at love in the 56-minute match.
âI played well right from the get-go,â Isner said. âWhen he has time, thatâs when he gets comfortable. So I wanted to keep the points short, which is what I want to do every match.
âThe wind was very, very tricky.â
Isner will play the winner of the Friday night quarterfinal between fourth seed Andy Roddick and seventh seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
Dudi Sela of Israel reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-0 win over fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
The 75th-ranked Sela reached his first ATP World Tour semifinal since the 2010 in Chennai, India. Itâs Selaâs fourth career semifinal. His only final was at the 2008 tournament in Beijing, where he lost to Roddick.
Sela was in position to close out Fridayâs match in two sets, but couldnât get the job done.
He was serving at 30-0 but lost the next four points to send the second set into a tiebreaker, which he lost. He came back to own the third set, losing only four points in his three service games.
âI was supposed to win in two sets,â Sela said. âI was 6-5 in the second set, 30-love serving, and I got a little nervous and he went for two good shots.
âBut Iâm happy I played well in the third, stayed positive and won the match.â
Sela will face Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic in the semifinals.
The 173rd-ranked Matosevic scored a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over 76th-ranked Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.
Gulbis, the 2010 champion here, double faulted eight times in the match. Three came in the sixth game of the second set, with two straight double faults on the final two points of that game.
Now Matosevic, who is currently working on an 11-match winning streak, is into his first career ATP semifinal.
He won five matches to win the Caloundra Challenger in Australia early last month and between qualifying and main draw matches already won six matches this tournament.
âIt feels good, especially coming through qualifying because it feels like I really earned it,â Matosevic said. âThe conditions were really tough and the wind was really getting me down in the first set. I just wasnât making enough balls and returns.
âI just let him beat himself in the end.â

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)â"Top-ranked Novak Djokovic lost for the first time this season, falling to Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals of the Dubai Championships on Friday.
The surprisingly one-sided victory ended Djokovicâs 10-match winning streak that included the Australian Open title and his bid for a fourth successive Dubai title.
In the final, Murray will meet Roger Federer, who edged Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6). Del Potro missed four set-points in the second-set tiebreaker at 6-2, with Federer winning the last six points.
Federer will aim for his fifth Dubai title but first in five years.
Murray gave himself a much-needed boost of confidence after losing to Djokovic in five-sets in the Australian Open semifinals.
âI think itâs big for me that after Australia this year Iâve come back and had a win like tonight,â Murray said. âHopefully that will set me up well for the year. Confidence in tennis and almost any individual sport is so important. A win like tonight will do that no harm.â
Coming into the match, Murray had lost seven of the last 11 matches against Djokovic. But the 24-year-old Briton made it look easy at the Aviation Club.
Murray broke the top-ranked Serb to go up 4-2 in the first set and then saved two break points to make it 5-2. His serve was his best weapon, with Murray winning 94 percent of his first service points in the first set and 85 percent overall.
Murray jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. But leading 5-3 and serving for the match, his opponent started taking more chances. Djokovic broke Murray for the first time to make it 5-4 and then tied it at 5. But Murray won the final two games, breaking Djokovic to win the match when the Serb sent a forehand long.
âThe first set I served very well and was aggressive when I had my chances,â Murray said. âIn the second set, he started going for more and making mistakes because itâs tough to always grind out matches. I think that was the difference.â
Murray said he felt his nearly five-hour loss to Djokovic in Australia paid dividends Friday, especially in the second set.
âThe thing you learn after a match like that is how much you need to sort of suffer on the court to win matches like that, and also how important it is,â he said.
âIt wasnât just the Australian Open, but the match in Rome last year was brutal. It was over three hours and we finished really late in the evening,â he said. âTheyâre tough matches to lose, but because you gave 110 percent and fight for every single point, it makes it more difficult for Novak.â
Djokovic paid tribute to Murrayâs aggressive play.
âI was fighting for it, but, you know, Andy played a great match,â Djokovic said. âHe was the better player today. He was serving really well. I made a lot of unforced errors when it was important. But, look, this is sport. Itâs normal that in some matches you canât pull out your best when you need to.â
Djokovic denied that his four weeks off since winning the Australian Openâ" a time in which he collected several awards and went skiing with friendsâ" influenced the outcome of the match. Still, the 24-year-old Serb appeared rusty in the early stages of the tournament, toiling to beat 72nd-ranked Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and 74th-ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky.
âI thought Iâve been doing well since Wimbledon last year. You know, Iâve been having a lot off-court activities since I became No. 1, but I have a team of people that controls it well,â he said.
âObviously there is a lot of temptations and a lot of things that you can enjoy. But itâs normal,â he said. âYou know, you canât on one hand just be 100 percent of your life in the tennis. You are young. You have to enjoy life.â
