DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)â€"Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland won her eighth career WTA title, defeating Julia Goerges of Germany 7-5, 6-4 in the Dubai Tennis Championships final on Saturday.

Radwanska will rise one place to a career-best No. 5 when the world rankings are released Monday.

The fifth-seeded Radwanska led in both sets but it took her almost 2 hours to overcome the unseeded Goerges.

The German rallied on her powerful forehand, but Radwanska patiently remained on the baseline to watch Goerges’ unsuccessful forays to the net, rushing her shots and returning them long and wide.

Radwanska led 4-1 in the second set. Goerges won three more games before Radwanska wrapped up the second win over her in a month.

“Her forehandâ€"it’s a very big weapon,” Radwanska said. “It’s just going so fast and sometimes, you know, I couldn’t even like move the right way and the ball was already behind me.”

Goerges was hoping to make up for the loss to Radwanska in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

“I’m not disappointed because it was a big step in the right direction for me,” Goerges said. “She’s a top-five player … I don’t think that I did so many things wrong.”

Radwanska improved her record to 15-3 on the year, with the three losses to top-ranked Victoria Azarenka. She pulled out of the Dubai tournament because of an ankle injury.

Radwanska said she was pleased with her move in the rankings, but there’s a long way to the top spot.

“Well, you know, yeah, I’m 5, but it’s still far from being No. 1,” Radwanska said. “Looks pretty close, but it’s still far.

Melzer caps Memphis run by upsetting Raonic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)â€"Jurgen Melzer capped his amazing run through the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships with a broken right big toe by beating Milos Raonic of Canada 7-5, 7-6 (4) on Sunday for his fourth career title and first since 2010.

Huber: 'Crazy' if we're not in Olympics

After winning her fourth title of the year in Dubai with partner Lisa Raymond, American Liezel Huber says she believes that she and her compatriot will be selected for the London Olympics. While Huber and Raymond are the world’s top team and will automatically qualify for the Games if they are ranked in the Top 10 after Roland Garros, they still have to be selected by their country. Because former Olympic gold medalist Venus Williams has expressed a desire to play doubles and may need a wild card to get into the competition, Raymond is worried that they might not be picked.

"She keeps saying, 'we hope,'" Huber said of Raymond. "Absolutely we're going to be playing. I think it would be crazy if our country didn't select us to go as the team. But it's a selection process, so you have to honor and respect that. But we will be tough competitors and contenders."

Chang offers advice to Jeremy Lin

Michael Chang, the only Asian-American to have won a Grand Slam singles title (the 1989 French Open), said that he has met and counseled fellow Asian-American and NBA sensation Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks.

"We have kind of a similar background," said Chang, who is playing at the ATP Champions Tour stop in Delray Beach. "We’ve both come from a middle class family and I know Jeremy had a really great high school career and obviously did really well at Harvard. I think that obviously being Asian-American and also both being of the Christian faith, we have a lot of things in common, so it’s nice to see him break free and do so well. I had some contact with him after he was done at Harvard. He has a mutual friend with my wife [former Stanford standout Amber Liu] and I had the opportunity to talk with him a little and encourage him, give him some advice on what it’s like to play professional sports. Obviously tennis is a little bit different because it’s an individual sport, but the lifestyle of being on the road and having to deal with a lot of different pressures and circumstances I think is very similar. So it was a good opportunity to guide him a little and I still try to encourage him whenever I can. I would love to see him continue the way he’s going. It’s a little bit of a juggling act right now for him, with everything that’s going on and all the attention, but I always told myself when I was playing that the most important thing were my expectations of myself."

Chang also told the Palm Beach Post that when he turned pro as a young teenager he did have his doubters. "I got comments about being too small, too short, there haven't been any Asian players and who am I to go out there and turn pro before my 16th birthday?" Chang said. "And that's all good and fine. People want to have their comments and their opinions. Ultimately, you do what you believe in your heart. I think for me, things turned out OK."

Federer discusses missed chances, No. 1 ranking

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)â€"Roger Federer blames a loss of confidence for failing to add to his record 16 Grand Slam titles in more than two years.

The former No. 1 last won a major title at the 2010 Australian Open but denies his form has been in decline, instead attributing that to “a bit of confidence not on my side and on my opponent’s side.”

“I’ve had some tough losses over the past couple of years,” Federer said, without nominating any specific matches.

Federer is in the United Arab Emirates along with No. 1 Novak Djokovic and fourth-ranked Andy Murray to play in the Dubai Championships, which start Monday.

Having broken Pete Sampras’ mark of 14 Grand Slam singles titles, Federer missed out on breaking the American’s 286-week reign at No. 1 by a single week. Now ranked third, the Swiss star has no realistic chance of the record with Djokovic so dominant.

“It would be great having that record but my life is very much OK without it, too,” Federer said. “Pete is a good friend and was an amazing champion for our game. I don’t need to break every record he has. I came so close and I could have chased it if I had wanted to. I didn’t choose to.”

Federer still believes he can return to No. 1, however, noting that he has won three titles in the past four monthsâ€"the most recent in Rotterdam earlier this month.

“I feel if I play really well until the U.S. Open, then obviously there is a shot. But then again there is a shot for about 10 players,” Federer said. “I am aware I’m not the only one. But I feel like I’m on a good run right now. I’ve won a lot of tournaments in a short time, which gives me a lot of confidence.”

Baghdatis: Djokovic doesn't scare me

Marcos Baghdatis says that the presence of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Dubai Duty Free Open does not scare him. "When I am in the tournament I don't see Novak winning," the former Australian Open finalist told Gulf News. "I am here to win and I don't care if he is there. I doubt he can win here this week, not when I am here at least."

Djokovic’s 20-year-old younger brother, Marko, received a wild card into the draw. Marko is ranked No. 867 this week and has yet to win an ATP main-draw match.

Djokovic: 'I Play My Best Tennis In Dubai'

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is in action this week for the first time since winning his fifth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Defending his Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships crown, Djokovic is confident he can replicate the success he’s had in previous years at the event, which has seen him win the past three trophies. "I'm looking forward to this week. I've always played my best tennis in Dubai," Djokovic said in a round table interview Sunday.

Chassis problem brings Lotus test to a standstill

Lotus will miss the rest of Tuesday's test at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya because of an issue with their car. Driver Romain Grosjean had completed just a few laps in the second E20 chassis during the morning session when the team decided to abandon their test programme. Â"This morning was our first shakedown of our second chassis,Â" explained trackside operations director Alan Permane. Â"Once the car was on track it was soon evident that everything wasn't quite as it should be. As a precaution we are returning the chassis to Enstone for further investigation. Chassis E20-01, which we used in Jerez, is being sent over and we expect to be on track with that chassis tomorrow.Â"
